Description

This obscure object is a small HII emission nebula located 20,000 light years away in the constellation of Orion at a declination of +15 degrees. The nebula spans 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of about 8 light years.

This object has understandably been visually mistaken for a planetary nebula in the past. It is likely not a PN for a number of reasons: it is too large in actual size, there is no OIII signal to be found, and strong radiation has been detected in the nebula. The star towards the center of this emission nebula is believed to be creating a strong stellar wind which is shaping this object into a ring. It looks like there may be a small cluster around the main star.
