Description

There are variants of an old cliche regarding "going back to your roots". When I started astrophotography last summer with a DSLR and lens it became apparent that seeking the biggest, most obvious targets in the sky was a must as I was hunting DSO's with an online star map and a swivel head on the Skyguider by hand. The North America Nebula seemed to be the best option for that. It was my first successful image in 2021 and as I went through different cameras and lenses I would return to it as a familiar object to try new equipment on. This year, as I struggled through guiding and software issues I kept looking for new objects. Last week it occurred to me that "returning to my roots" to get up close and personal with the bigger focal length scope to really work on maximizing my integration and worry less about framing a yet unknown (to me) object might be advantageous. I sure am glad I did. Despite a processing hangup (OS upgrade crashing drizzle data integration) I feel like this is my best image to date. Even after throwing out roughly 25% of my subs over 3 nights I captured by far my most robust integration time at 12+ hours.

There are just a couple things I wish I had done differently. This was my first time using the NINA framing assistant. I should have rotated the camera to get a little more of the Wall's length in the frame. Additionally, the next time I shoot this area I will use the .65 reducer, which will bring in more of the wall without sacrificing too much detail.

Edit: After upgrading my desktop rig (and setting up a second boot drive for Linux, I was able to pull the drizzle data into the final integration.  The result brought out more of the HA strands.
