Description

This colour image is a detail study of the craters, Janssen (190km), Fabricius (78km), Brenner (97km) & Metius (88km). The contrast of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) is fabulous when craters such as these are observed on the terminator.

An IR 642nm BP image was used as Luminance with the RGB frames.

The huge Janssen crater is ancient and has seen better days. Several other large craters and numerous smaller ones have impacted within the crater or its boundary. The beautiful crater Fabricius is within its walls. The floor of the crater is run with rills, the so called Rimae Janssen, which curl around and extend some 140km.

Fabricius which is substantially in shadow has a system of central peaks and they rise some 0.8kms from its floor. A couple of these peaks are just catching the light.

Crater Metius is even more in shadow, but the outline of Metius G in the main crater's wall shows up nicely here.

Brenner at upper left in the image is an ancient and heavily worn crater.

On a night of very good seeing, the resolution here is under a kilometre.
