Description

This image represents both a big step forward from the last time I posted an image of NGC 6960 and the challenges associated with learning how to use new equipment. This version was taken with a new mount, Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro, a new scope and reducer, William Optics GT81, and new light pollution filter, Optolong's L-eXtreme.  Nothing like changing multiple variables at once...

Bright stars are more challenging for me using the L-eXtreme than with the L-eNhance.  52 Cygni in this image has a blown out halo area about 4 x the star's diameter.  I tried about 6 different ways to subdue the blown out area.  The marginally successful method I used in this image was to make a mask around the halo using the GAME script, apply the mask, and then use curves transformation.  I also toned down the stars with curves on the extracted RGB stars image from Star Exterminator before adding them back into the final image.  I need to find a better method.  I'm planning to try taking  some very short duration images and adding them via HDRComposition.
