Description

I waited long for this iconic pair to reach the sky above the trees in my backyard. In my opinon those are amongst the most beautiful nebula. They are also a bit special to me because it was the object of one of my first astro pictures more than 20 years ago. I was a young guy in the youth group of our local amateur astronomy club. The picture I shot then was of course on film with a Canon AE-1. Tonight, 20 years later, I finally shot this object again.

The image consists out of 50x 300s frames with the Canon 500Da and the Nikkor Prime 135 f/2.8 stepped down to 5.6. The Nikkor is a almost 50 year old pre AI era version, way before they used ED coatings. This is clearly visible because the stars tend to show halos/aberrations. This gets worse in the corners, but there is also a chance that I tilted the sensor slightly when I modified the Canon.

This night it was also the first time that I used automatic dithering with BackyardEOS every two frames. For me this was clearly noticed in the pre/post-processing.

With this in mind I think this image is anyways a big success for me. The learning curve since I re-entered astro photography early this year was steep, but I have fun and I have the feeling that my images get better over time.

I wonder if I will make a present to myself with a nice Samyang 135 f/2 in the future. I just love those widefield images.

Best regards from Switzerland,

Jan
