Description

An object often overlooked is the mag 10.1 spiral galaxy NGC 2997 in the faint southern constellation of Antlia. Seen here in a field of colourful Milky Way stars, it lies around 40 million ly away and is inclined about 45 deg from face on. Several spiral arms are visible that are defined by red star forming regions and collections of young blue stars while towards the core lie older yellow stars and lanes of dust. A gem.
