Description

IC 5146 is a reflection/emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus.
To be more precise, the NGC catalogue description refers to IC 5146 as an open cluster of 9.5 mag stars involved in a bright and dark nebula, from which the name "Cocoon" given to the nebula which surrounds the cluster.
Indeed this nebula is a stellar nursery where star-formation is ongoing, like observed with astronomical satellites.
On the upper side of the image is visible the blue nebula VdB 147 and several dark lanes due to the dust.
All the complex is around 2500/3000 light years far from the Earth.
