Description

Sh2-235 is a bright HII region, that is part of a larger complex consisting of SH2-231, 232, and 233 in the constellation Auriga.  It is odd in that it contains much more SII than OIII.  In fact, it contains very little OII; thus, I am presenting an unusual Ha:SII bicolor image.    While that in itself is strange, I also made a couple of bad decisions which led this to be a very disappointing result.  I challenged nature in that I thought I could image this object despite being only a few degrees away from the moon during evenings with very intense moon glow (80-99%).  As a result, despite hours of pre- and postprocessing and having very good equipment, I struggled to get an image that displays the clarity and resolution I usually expect.  So, between the close proximity of SH2-235 to the moon, my usual LP sky, and a couple of nights with below average seeing (although most of the evenings seeing was average or above to avoid oversampling with my 0.28 arcsec/pixel setup), I learned that even NB imaging has its limitations.  As a result, I had to eliminate over 10 hours of data as SII, in particular, was washed out.  Despite all of this, I decided to post it anyway for three main reasons: 1) to remind me to revisit this beautiful site and re-image it under more favorable conditions, 2) not to be stupid again and repeat these errors and 3) you can at least see the wonderful interaction with Sh2-235 with its bigger companion in the lower left, Sh2-233.
