Description

M100 is a grand design spiral in Coma Berenices.  It is about 55 million light years distant and one of the brightest and largest galaxies in the Virgo Cluster.  It was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1781 and was one of the first spiral galaxies to be discovered.  Both NGC 4323 (close to M100 on the right side) and NGC 4328 are satellite galaxies of M100 with NGC 4323 connected with it by a bridge of luminous matter.

M100 is considered a starburst galaxy with the strongest star formation activity concentrated at the center within a ring consisting of two tightly wound spiral arms. This core area is very bright within the blue channel.  See Revision for a close up of the core area.
