Description

This image captures the Eta Carina star (at the right of the L-shaped dust lanes near the centre) and the surrounding nebulosity.  An additional nebula (NGC3324) with a semi-circular rim is visible in the lower right corner.  Eta Carina may near becoming a supernova.

The image consists of SHO data acquired from only 2h 44m of exposure, about 10 time less than I normally aim for.  Data was acquired from ski field chain bay on Coronet Peak, Queenstown, New Zealand (lat. 45º S, elev. 1040m (3415ft)).  Despite splendid clear dark skies, excellent seeing, and a low temperature of 7ºC,  was only able to acquire a fairly small number of subs after problems setting up and calibrating the gear and clouds slowing rising  slowly up the mountain from the lake below.  Although it was a sunny summer, clouds tended to roll in after sunset and I did not have another opportunity to acquire more data until next year.

Data acquired with ASI1600MM camera gain of 50dB cooled to -10ºC.  All 120s exposures: Ha/NII 5nm 25x120s, OIII 3nm 22x120s, SII 3nm 35x120s.  All subs were of high quality.

Processing was much simpler than my past practice and utilized the new RC-Astro BlurExterminator and NoiseExterminator processes in Pixinsight after WBPP integration and AutoBackgroundExtraction (there was a little light pollution gradient from creeping urbanization and the airport way down below). Remaining processing was using the new GeneralizedHyperbolicStretch process and a few tweaks to the colors with SCNR.  Processing was as simple as that.
