Description

NGC 2419 got its nickname because was at one point it was thought not to be orbiting the Milky Way. It does though, being probably the most distant (270,000 light years) of our galaxy's globular clusters and taking well over a billion years to make one orbit around the Milky Way.

I compared its size to M13, which is ten times closer to us at "only" 26,000 light years distant. M13 is around 33 arc minutes across whereas NGC2319 extends out to at least 8 arc minutes across (in my image), despite being 10 times farther away than M13. Based on its distance, this makes the outer edges of NGC2419 halo around 640 light years across, more than double the size of M13's outer halo of 250 light years across.

The core star detail is maintained nicely because of the lucky imaging capture technique. Each eleven 5 minute images stacked to produce this image were a live stack of 75 x 4 second exposures, live stacked in SharpCap.
