Description

Professor Edward Emerson Barnard, a 19th century astronomer, cataloged over 300 dark nebulae, areas of thick, non-illuminated dust that we can only see by virtue of them blocking the light from stars farther away. As such, they often look like "holes" or "voids" in space.
