Description

This image contains three primary targets from the spring constellation Canes Venatici. They comprise the NGC 4631 Galaxy Group - 30 million light years distant.

First on the left is Caldwell 32, or the "Whale Galaxy".  It is a barred spiral galaxy.  It's distorted wedge shape gives it the herring or whale appearance.  The bright area towards the right-center of the whale contains a starburst, which is a region of intense star formation.  This strong star formation is evident in the emission from ionized hydrogen and interstellar dust heated by the stars formed in the starburst.  The most massive stars that form in star formation regions only burn hydrogen gas through fusion for a short period of time, after which they explode as supernovae. So many supernovae have exploded in the center of Caldwell 32 that they are blowing gas out of the plane of the galaxy.

As seen in this image, Caldwell 32 (or NGC 4631) has a nearby companion dwarf elliptical galaxy identified as NGC4627.  A baby whale perhaps?

The right portion of this image contains NGC 4656/57 - a highly warped barred spiral galaxy informally known as the Hockey Stick Galaxies or the Crowbar Galaxy.  The unusual shape is due to the interaction between NGC 4656, NGC 4631, and NGC 4627.
