Description

Lambda Orionis (a.k.a. Meissa) is a bright star in the constellation of Orion (the Hunter) shining at magnitude 3.54 and is the brightest star that we see in this image. Meissa and its companions make for a nice grouping embedded within the HII region - Sharpless 2-264 (the Angel Fish Nebula). I imaged the Angel Fish Nebula in 2016 with the same camera (QSI683) and Canon 100mm Macro f2.8 lens which gave a field of view of abut ten degrees wide. Click on the thumbnail below for a view of the wide field image. SH2-264 is also known as the Lambda Orionis Ring and is a HII region forming part of the Orion molecular cloud complex, a large star forming region in the constellation of Orion.

I was drawn to this area as an imaging target as it provides a nice selection of contrasting colours and objects with the grouping of bright stars set against the glowing red of the HII emissions. A couple of faint background galaxies have even made their way into the scene.
