Description

I have been planning to shoot a mosaic of the Orion nebula and friends, to capture the complete smile and surrounding region for well over a year now. After getting a lens that had 70mm focal length as an option, I realized that I might just be able to capture the whole thing in a single frame, which is what I attempted to do here. And it turned out very well, which goes on to show the extreme versatility of the 70-200GM lens when it comes to shooting sharp images even at wide open without defects. I’m genuinely suprised by how well this lens performs in astrophotography, when it’s not made for it.

This project was both fun and challenging. I spent an entire night shooting orion in 4 different exposure lengths, so that I can create an “HDR” orion image without missing out on anything. Processing this set of data was also very challenging as it’s hard to combine 4 integrations with vastly different SNR and background brightness. It took me around 5-6 hours to process the entire thing (Stacking excluded). Without GraXpert, it would have been near impossible, or so frustrating that I would have given up.

The data for this was captured back in November.
