Description

Roughly 1,200 light years away from us, B150 is a dark nebula commonly called the Seahorse nebula due to its shape.   It is located in the Cepheus constellation.

Dark nebula are best likened to clouds in our sky.  They are areas of dense gas and dust that are drifting through space.  Dark nebula do not emit light, but block out the light of the stars located behind them just like a cloud in our sky blocks out the clear sky behind it.  This is a particularly beautiful dark nebula as the star field in this part of the sky is quite densely packed with beautifuly colored stars located in our local arm of the Milky Way.

Dark nebula are particularly difficult targets to capture and process.  Dark skies that are free of light pollution and good seeing conditions are required to resolve the fine details.  I love the challenge that they present and I plan to target them often during new moon cycles with my remote TOA-150 rig at Sierra Remote Observatory.

I hope you find them as intriguing as I do.
