A nebulosa da Tarântula é uma das mais espetaculares e impressionantes maravilhas do universo.Localizada a cerca de 160.000 anos-luz de distância da Terra, ela é tão grande que, se fosse visível a olho nu, seria do tamanho da Lua cheia no céu noturno.

Composta principalmente de hidrogênio, hélio e poeira cósmica, a nebulosa é o resultado de uma explosão de supernova ocorrida há milhares de anos. Além disso, a Nebulosa da Tarântula é um dos berçários estelares mais ativos conhecidos, com centenas de estrelas sendo formadas em seu interior. E entre essas estrelas, existe uma das maiores e mais brilhantes estrelas conhecidas, a R136a1, que tem uma massa de mais de 250 vezes a do nosso Sol.

The Tarantula Nebula is one of the most spectacular and impressive wonders of the universe. Located approximately 160,000 light-years away from Earth, it is so large that if it were visible to the naked eye, it would be the size of a full moon in the night sky.

Primarily composed of hydrogen, helium, and cosmic dust, this nebula is the result of a supernova explosion that occurred thousands of years ago. Furthermore, the Tarantula Nebula is one of the most active stellar nurseries known, with hundreds of stars being formed within it. And among those stars is one of the biggest and brightest stars known, R136a1, which has a mass more than 250 times that of our Sun.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
