Description

The region surrounding the Bubble Nebula is populated by numerous nebulae that are interesting and attractive in their own right. However, the Bubble is so photogenic that it tends to hog the attention of astrophotographers. I have framed this shot so as to give two nearby nebulae their just due. Just below and to the right of the center of the image is triangularly-shaped Sh 2-159. The densest part of this emission nebula (which appears as a small, irregularly shaped orange patch in my image) coincides with a compact source of radio waves and surrounds a class O9 V star, which is the main source of the nebula's ionization. To the upper right of the image is the bright emission nebula NGC 7538. The main source of this nebula's ionization is a protostar that is 300 times the size of our entire Solar System, the largest known protostar. Both Sh 2-159 and NGC 7538 are part of the same large molecular cloud, which weighs in at about 595,000 solar masses. The nebulae lie about 9,000 light years distant from us. The Bubble Nebula is considerably closer, about 7,000 light years from us. Out of view just below the bottom of the image is the equally interesting Lobster Claw Nebula. That will be the target for another day.
