Description

This season the weather has been dreadful for astrophotography where I live. So, in every opening in the sky I try to use the little time available to do some testing. I typically use my QHY600 camera in "high gain mode" with gain set to 56 in order to maximize the dynamic range (13.65 stops). Not long ago, QHY introduced a new mode called "extend fullwell 2CMS", with slightly greater dynamic range (13.75 stops, at gain = 0) and with 60% more well capacity. I decided to try this mode in order to take fewer, longer subexposures, without overblowing bright areas/stars.

I targeted M8 (in H-alpha) due to its high dynamic range and general brightness, and took only 3 20-minute subs (total of one hour). The sky condition was less than optimal, with high cirrus clouds passing by, and with a bright near full super moon aproaching. I was very pleasantly surprised  with the result. Not even the core of M8 saturated with 20-minute subexposures, and the background noise looked smooth and nice. I will start using this mode from now on.
