Description

In a previous post I mentioned that Borrego Springs was one a a few official Dark Sky Communities; that statement is a bit dated. It is one of the first because many communities are working to earn the International Dark-Sky Association certification. This was my first time out there specifically for shooting the metal sculptures. Not many people go to the desert in Jun-Aug because it is so hot, and because many of the hotels and resorts are closed for the summer. I think the best way to do astronomy in Borrego Springs is to attend the Riverside Telescope Makers Nightfall Star Party (http://nightfallstarparty.com) in October. The Palm Canyon Hotel and RV Park is lit in red lights for the star party, and everything is setup for astronomers and observing. The metal sculptures are a short drive away. The Milky Way is in the SW around 9 PM, so it is in a good direction for pictures. At the star party you can leave your telescope setup in the telescope field in the parking lot, and just go to sleep in your room a short walk away. There are lots of great people who come from all over the US and the world. If you decide to go, book early because it does sell out.
