Description

First image from the Green Bank Star Quest: the Crescent Nebula! This is my third attempt at it and by far the best one, since the sky was soooooo dark.

Also known as NGC 6888, this is an emission nebula that lies about 5,000 lightyears away, in the constellation of Cygnus, the swan. It might look like a supernova remnant, but it's actually the fast stellar wind from Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 colliding with its own ejected gas from its red giant phase some hundreds of thousands of years ago.
