Description

Gassendi and Mare Humorum. The importance of this ordinary image was that it was taken using a 139 year old Grubb 8" Refractor installed in 1878. The image was taken through trees from an observatory located in a quadrangle at University College Cork. The original clockwork tracking mechanism is driven by a small firmware controlled motor that replaces the weight and timing parts of the 1878 drive. This image was taken as part of the Cork Astronomy Club's activities in assisting UCC to keep the two Grubb (8" & 13") telescopes in active use.

The image was taken at Bin 2 and the excess darkness of the terminator cropped. PIPP was used to remove a lot of out of focus frames from the "through the trees" view.
