Copernicus - A geologically young and hence well-preserved lunar impact crater whose details were relatively clear in the Skywatcher 8 inch Newtonian last Friday night. This young impact crater occurred just a billion years ago, and is much more recent than the LHB (Late Heavy Bombardment) that sculpted the lunar surface between 4.1 and 3.8 billion years ago. The 3 central peaks that rise up to 1.2km above the crater floor are dominated by olivine and formed by rebound of deep-seated lunar crustal rocks from directly below the impactor. Various slump faults and slump blocks can be seen around the edges of the 93-km-wide crater.
