Description

Here's the central region of the Heart nebula (IC1805) in Cassiopeia, also referred to as the Heart of the Heart! Despite being almost invisible to the naked eye, the Heart Nebula has an angular size of 1x1 degrees, about 2x2 full Moons! With short focal lenses, when the whole nebula fits the field of view, this object appears heart-shaped; with longer focal telescopes, the nebula does not fit inside the field of view, and it is only possible to image its core. Last Wednesday night, with the sub-zero temperatures that have hit the UK I literally froze to take this image! The picture that you see here is a false color HOO narrowband composite obtained by combining 3.5h acquisitions for both H-a and O-III filters.
