Description

This less than exciting object is an moving open cluster of about 30 stars located 500 light years away in the southern constellation of Vela. The cluster is named after its brightest star, Omicron Velorum. This is the most southern of the Caldwell objects that I am able to image. With its declination of -53 degrees, it transits 6 degrees above my southern horizon.

Amazingly, this is one of the earliest identified deep sky objects, first described by the Persian astronomer Al Sufi way back in 964 AD.

I thought maybe my mind would change once I processed it, but I feel the same way now as when I first took subs of this cluster - not too impressive. Perhaps a wider FOV would have captured a few more bright stars to help define the cluster, but the field is already 3 degrees wide. I would guess that this object was designated a Caldwell object primarily because of its historical significance.
