Description

The Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy is a dwarf spheroidal galaxy and a satellite of the Milky Way that lies within the constellation Sculptor. With a magnitude of 8.6 and about 25 x 20 arcminutes in size, it is located about 290,000 light-years away from the Solar System.

Interestingly it contains only 4 percent of the carbon and other heavy elements in our Milky Way, making it similar to primitive galaxies seen at the edge of the universe (according to Wikipedia) which in itself raises some interesting questions. Cosmology should be be a science rooted in observation. The questions that those observations raise and how theories and their predictions can withstand the blow torch of falsification will further our quest for knowledge.
We live in interesting times and this is an unusual object and thus well suited to further the quest for truth through science.

While perhaps not the prettiest object to image, I can tick it off my bucket list. It was quite well placed for a decent run on a rare clear night with excellent seeing before the clouds rolled back in and let me get a good nights sleep.  The previous night was supposed to be the pick but became very hit and miss. I had the 12"" dob out to look at Jupiter with a friend between clouds. Luckily I wasn't imaging as a un-predicted rain shower hit when we had our backs turned so it was a mad scramble getting the gear in. No harm done phew but it goes to show. Weather forecasting is amazing these days but  ... seriously ... do not to drop your guard when there is a lot of very expensive equipment exposed to the vagaries of mother nature and you don't have a retractable roof hooked up to a rain sensor. One day ...
