Description

HFG 1 is a very old large, low-surface-brightness planetary nebula in Cassiopeia. It surrounds, and was produced by, a binary star system (V664 Cas) that is moving rapidly through our Galaxy. V664 Cas is composed of a white dwarf star and a large red giant. The two stars are very close and rotate around their common centre of gravity every 14 hours.

Abell 6 is an example of a bubble-shaped planetary nebula. However, it remains quite faint at magnitude 15.

This was a great target to work on. I knew it would be a long project because I wanted a clean background and good detail within both feature targets of the image. I am happy with the shock front of HFG-1 and the "wispy" detail in the OIII channel in this object. There is a decent texture present in Abell 6 as well that was a bit of a surprise.

I added some star spikes in post production, sparingly, to add a bit more depth and vibrancy to the image.

Thanks for looking!
