Description

Good afternoon everyone! Today's upload is Messier 61, an intermediate barred spiral galaxy that can be found in the constellation Virgo about 52 million light years from Earth. This galaxy is one of the largest in the Virgo galaxy cluster, and has an active galactic nucleus with a candidate super massive black hole estimated to have a mass of around 5 million solar masses. This galaxy is also classified as a starburst galaxy, with many nebulous regions and starburst regions throughout the galaxy. 7 supernovae have been observed in this galaxy, making this galaxy a very interesting object to study. I hope you like today's image, be sure to check back tomorrow for a new one! Clear Skies!
