Description

Good morning everyone! Today's image is Messier 51, The Whirlpool Galaxy. The Whirlpool Galaxy is estimated to be between 15 and 35 million light years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. This galaxy is a grand-design interacting spiral galaxy (meaning it has two main spiral arms), and has an active galactic nuclei. This beautiful galaxy can be seen easily even with binoculars, and perhaps because of its visibility was the first galaxy to be categorized as a spiral galaxy.
