This is M74 from the Deep Sky West RCOS system. I am still getting used to this DSW data and learning how best to process it. As I get more practiced I will come back to this again. Acquisition dates shown are the earliest ones per filter, but the data was collected into December 2017. I decided to leave the image only slightly cropped from the original camera field because I wanted to annotate the region.

M74 is in Pisces. Wikipedia calls it "an archetypal example of a grand design spiral galaxy." It is about 30 Mly distant with apparent magnitude of 10.0 and apparent size about 10'.

During the beginning of the acquisition of the L filter on November 10, 2017, a prominent asteroid passed through the field of view. PixInsight managed to remove it from the integrated image since it did not appear consistently in the frames. I am attempting to make an animation of this as it is quite interesting, and one can also see three other much fainter asteroids moving along in formation.

The brighter asteroid is Peraga with magnitude 11.6. The three fainter ones are harder for me to identify, but I'll come back to them when I have more time.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
