Description

This object is a grand spiral galaxy located 35 million light years away in the southern constellation of Hydra. This beautiful but seldom imaged galaxy (one other image on Astrobin) is just over half the size of our Milky Way.

Even though there is little written about this object, I really like it. It looks very delicate in the bright colorful surrounding star field. The core looks like a bar to me, extending much further down from the center than up. Bright blue star clusters are sprinkled throughout the well formed arms. The dark dust lanes are pronounced and extend all of the way to the core.

The number of galaxy arms are difficult to identify. My best guess would be four.
