Description

M16 incorporates a star cluster surrounded by dust and glowing gasses approximately 7,000 light years from Earth and can be seen in the constellation of Serpens. It is known as the ‘Eagle Nebula’ (because it resembles the outstretched wings of an eagle) or the ‘Star Queen Nebula’. The nebula is a region of active star formation, and the towering structures in the interior were famously dubbed the ‘Pillars of Creation’ after being imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

This image was processed in PixInsight using the Hubble palette (Red = SII, Green = Ha, Blue = OIII). The final image was cropped to focus on the interior region of the nebula.
