Description

The Cygnus Wall is the area of the most concentrated star formation within the North America Nebula (NGC 7000). Measurements made in 2020 by the Gaia spacecraft of stars lying within the nebula have placed the distance to NGC 7000 at 2,590 light years.

I have processed this image in such a way as to highlight the three-dimensional structure that, from our perspective, produces the shape of the North America Nebula. Many images of this region have an elevated black point that enhances the contrast between dark nebula LDN 935 (which constitutes the "Gulf of Mexico") and NGC 7000, with an eye toward highlighting the shape that gives the nebula its nickname. However, such an approach tends to hide the subtle details of LDN 935 and to obscure the fact that tendrils of the dark nebula spill over onto the "continent." Preserving detail in LDN 935, as I have attempted to do, highlights the fact that LDN 935 lies in front of NGC 7000, thereby imparting a sense of depth to the image.
