Description

Imaged Mars on the evening of August 24, 2018 under the best seeing I've experienced all year. Clear Dark Sky forcast 5/5 seeing for the night, and I the images were the steadiest I can recall. I took advantage of the seeing to collimate my SCT before starting the imaging runs (many nights a fruitless exercise with the typical seeing in the DC area). Thanks to the good seeing, a decently collimated scope, and the clearing skies on Mars as the dust storm diminishes, I managed to get my best Mars images yet.

Imaged with a C8 Evo, custom Siebert 2x barlow, ZWO ADC, Baader IR 685nm pass filter, and ZWO ASI224MC. Imaging train was configured to give me ~F/25. Image capture using Sharpcap (for some reason I could get 200+ FPS in sharpcap and only 100+ in Firecapture). Gain set at 300 and exposure was 3 ms. Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 10% of ~50,000 frames captured over 300 seconds.). Color balancing and Wavelet sharpening in Registax6. Adjusted orientation in WinJupos (in preparation for combining with color images)
