Description

This shows a supernova that was first detected on August 23rd, 2011. This is the closest supernova detected in since 1972 (the Pinwheel Galaxy is 21 light years away). It was detected by the University of Berkly by the Palomar Transient Factory survey designed to detect type 1a supernova (which are used to estimate the expansion of space). Unfortunately, it was very hazy out and the second image showing the supernova is very faded. I'm quite lucky I was able to get an image of M101 prior to the explosion so I could compare the two.
