Description

La nébuleuse planétaire "Helix" dans la constellation du Verseau, l'une des plus proches de la Terre à 700 années-lumière environ. La structure annulaire s'étend sur plus de 2,5 années-lumière.
Cette nébuleuse résulte de l'expulsion de ses couches extérieures par l'étoile centrale en fin de vie.
On peut voir dans la partie centrale de la nébuleuse des "noeuds cométaires", dont la partie centrale est d'une taille comparable au système solaire. On estime leur nombre à plus de 20 000 dans cette nébuleuse, où ce type de structures a été découvert.

The Helix planetary nebula in Aquarius is one of the closest of the Earth, with an estimated distance of about 700 LY.
This nebula is formed by an intermediate to low-mass star, which sheds its outer layers near the end of its evolution.
The Helix Nebula was the first planetary nebula discovered to contain cometary knots, which, excluding the tails, are approximately the size of the Solar system. More than 20,000 cometary knots have been estimated in this nebula.
