Description

Between dodging moonlight and weather, this picture took a while to complete. It is Caldwell 101 (NGC 6744), an intermediate spiral galaxy very similar to our own Milky Way, although it is about twice as large.  It is one of the few large spiral galaxies in our galactic neighborhood. Similar to our Magellanic Clouds, it has a distorted companion galaxy near the tip of the top-most arm. It is said that if you were a spectator looking from Caldwell 101 towards the Milky Way, the view would be much like ours looking at them.
