Description

The lunar eclipse on the night of January 20-21, 2019 was an amazing sight to behold, and I almost missed it... We were away for the weekend at Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland, so I packed a to go imaging DSLR lens setup instead of the usual refractor/EQ mount imaging rig. The weather was great for winter adventures but terrible for astrophotography with sleet and snow all weekend, but despite the forcast we were fortunate to at least get partially cloudy skies at the time of the eclipse. Of course is was still 2 degrees F out (before windchill factor) with gustly winds blowing fine show all over the place. We were able to observe the progression of the moon into the Earth's umbra between first contact and second contact and captured a few images along the way. This is my first time observing the progression of a lunar eclipse and what an amazing sight to orbital motions in action!

This image was taken at 11:42 pm just seconds after the time of second contact when the moon entered fully into the Earth's umbra. Imaged with a 28-300 mm Nikor zoom lens at 300 mm and F/8, Nikon D750 DSLR, and a fixed tripod. Exposure of 8 seconds at ISO400.
