Description

IC 4628, a.k.a Prawn Nebula, Gum 56 an emission nebula in Scorpius ~6000 light years away and ~250 light-years across. First documented by Edward Emerson Barnard (The same person who did Barnard's catalog of dark nebulae) around 1905, the IC II catalog (1895-1907) marks him as of the observers. Also cataloged as Gum 56 for astronomer Colin Stanley Gum. Home to a stellar nursery with hot, young stars illuminating the region's surrounding gas.

In this wide field view, the nebula is surrounded by star clusters NGC 6231 at the bottom, NGC 6242 just above it, and NGC 6268 just above the left. The dark hazy patch just beside the nebula on the left is B48. B44a and B232 can also be seen on the extreme right of the nebula.

SHO 15h (3x30x600s) narrowband false-color image from AUS-2 a Takahashi FSQ-106ED (106 mm) F3.6 telescope with FLI PL16083 camera and  Astrodon LRGB 2GEN, SHO (3nm) filters, situated in Heaven's Mirror Observatory, Australia. Part of the telescope.live telescope network. Taken on multiple dates June 2021 - May 2022.
