On the one full clear night for a while, I could not resist an image of the horsehead nebula - the first image I posted on Astrobin last year, and something of a yardstick to measure progress. Although still fairly low in the morning sky, seeing improved, allowing 120s exposures - 30 subs L using my Ha/OIII filter and 7 subs each RGB using 2x2 binning.

Data were captured in Envisage, with dark subtraction, then stacked, scaled and aligned in Nebulosity, before post-processing in Startools. I used a standard workflow, with aggressive contrast to darken and isolate B33 (in life module). This is the Luminance (Ha and OIII) frame taken through my Optolong L-eNhance filter.

I used a visual back to secure the 1.25" filter and DSI3 Pro mono camera and note significant vignetting in the optical train, which I need to correct using a T2 adapter to achieve the correct sensor distance. My autoguider achieved ~1.5" which seemed reasonable given the conditions, and the repair module did a reasonable job of improving the star shapes. Alnitak has a bright halo that I was unable to suppress.

Anyway it has been fun messing about and learning new techniques...progress.

Description: A colour version, from combined L(Ha)RGB data, processed in Startools - I was unable to fix the bizarre but colourful halo around Alnitak.

I am finding colour processing much more challenging, and look forward to trying new techniques. For the time being, the monochrome image has captured more detail, and better survived my processing!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
