Description

Melotte 15 inside the Heart Nebula

7500 LY from Earth in the Perseus Arm of our Galaxy in the Constellation Cassiopeia

Comprised of an emission nebula and an open star cluster, Melotte 15 is easily recognized by it's striking zigzagged ionized spires of hydrogen gas shaped and ionized by the solar winds of the nearby cluster stars.

The Melotte 15 star cluster is just one of many of the fairly young (1.5 million years) clusters of stars formed from the two giant neighboring molecular clouds designated IC1805 and Westerhout 5, Heart Nebula and Soul Nebula respectively.
