Description

Also designated Gum 23/22, RCW 38 is part of the Rodgers, Campbell and Whiteoak (RCW) catalog of H alpha emission regions in the southern Milky Way. The RCW catalog contains 182 objects, some of which overlap with the GUM, Caldwell and Sharpless catalogs. The RCW catalog was compiled by the aforementioned men while they were working under Bart Bok at the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia during the 1960's. RCW Catalogue - Wikipedia

This nebula appears in the southern sky in the vicinity of the Vela supernova remnant. It is about a degree and a half south of the Pencil Nebula, NGC 2736 and is believed to be a star forming region. It is estimated to be 5500 light years from earth. Produced using RGB data with H and O narrowband added.
