Description

The Elephant Trunk Nebula is a highly concentrated region of interstellar matter located in the huge free gas region IC 1396 of Cepheus, about 2400 light-years away from the earth. This nebula, known as IC 1396a, is a dark, dense sphere. Because it is a dark patch with bright and winding edges at the wavelength of visible light, it is commonly known as the Trunk Nebula
