Description

SH2-115 (LBN 357), an emission nebula in Cygnus, was imaged from my backyard observatory over eight nights during June and July 2022.  The image also contains Abell 71, the round object at top left, which was thought to be planetary nebula and included in Abell’s catalogue, but is now considered to be a Ha-rich emission nebula.  During this project my new Chroma 3nm SII and OIII filters arrived so that these channels are a combination of 3nm and 7nm data. The image is rich in SII data which shows up as a nice red in this SHO image. The stars were taken in RGB and added towards the end of image processing. Total integration time was about 34 hours, all at gain 139dB with camera cooled to 0°C (it was summer), consisting of:Ha.  71 x 480s Astrodon 5nm filterSII   34 x 480s ZWO 7nm filterSII   48 x 480s Chroma 3nm filterOIII 60 x 480s ZWO 7nm filterOIII 36 x 480s Chroma 3nm filterR,G,B  total 72 x 60s Astrodon filters Subframes pre-processed in Pixinsight using WBPP v2.4.5 which helped a lot to remove light pollution gradients.  Further processing in Pixinsight to remove gradients, deconvolution to sharpen and denoising.  Removed and discarded stars from narrowband images using StarExterminator plugin in Pixinsight. Getting the right blend of channels when creating the SHO starless master was a challenge and settled for a slight boost of SII to give the final image some colour.  RGB images were combined but I did not waste time on deconvolution or noise reduction as they looked OK. After photmetric colour calibration I removed the stars using Starnet2 and combined them with the narrowband master using PI Pixelmath.  After a few tweaks with CurveTransformation and a final denoise with Topaz AI the final image was revealed.
