Description

The Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888), also called the Crescent Nebula or Caldwell 27, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, located 6º southwest of Sadr (γ Cygni). It is located about 4,700 light years away from Earth.

The Crescent Nebula is a Wolf-Rayet nebula, formed by the strong stellar wind caused by Wolf-Rayet's star WR 136 colliding with and energizing the slower wind that ejected the star when it became a red giant about 400,000 years ago. years. As a result of this collision, an envelope and two shock waves have been formed, one moving outwards and the other inwards. The inward-moving shock wave heats the stellar wind to temperatures where it emits X-rays.
