Description

This is an area of reflection, emission, and dark nebula in the Vela constellation cataloged as GUM 15 and RCW31.  The area lies roughly 3,000 light years away from us.  The nebula is likely ionized by the B-class multiple star HD74707, the brightest member of the star cluster Collinder 197.

I am continuing to search for beautiful and under-represented regions of the southern sky, and this target jumped out at me with only a handful of images on Astrobin.

I had an issue with some refracted light in one corner from a nearby bright star which limited my ability to stretch the periphery as much as I would have liked.  Careful blending of the Ha and luminance data was required in order to build a final luminance image that brought out the subtle details that each data set contributed.
