The Seagull Nebula (IC 2177) is an emission nebula between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. It lies 3650 light years from Earth and spans 240 light years. It consists largely of H-II (ionized atomic hydrogen) from which new stars form. The gas cloud at the "head" of the seagull (Sharpless 2-292) shines brightly due to the energetic radiation of an extremely hot young star in its interior (HD 53367). The entire nebula was likely part of a larger structure carried away by successive supernova explosions.

The picture was taken on four days in March and April 2023 from my south-facing balcony in Berlin (Bortle 6-7), from which the nebula could be seen for about 2 hours in the evening.

Der Seemövennebel (IC 2177) ist ein Emissionsnebel zwischen den Sternenbildern Einhorn und Großer Hund. Er liegt 3650 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt und erstreckt sich über 240 Lichtjahre. Er besteht größten Teils aus H-II (ionisierter atomarer Wasserstoff) aus dem neue Sterne entstehen. Die Gaswolke am "Kopf" der Möwe (Sharpless 2-292) leuchtet hell durch die energiereiche Strahlung eines extrem heißen jungen Sterns in ihrem Inneren (HD 53367). Der gesamte Nebel war warscheinlich Teil einer größeren Struktur, die von aufeinanderfolgenden Supernova-Explosionen mitgerissen wurde.

Das Bild ist an vier Tagen in März und April 2023 von meinem Süd-Balkon in Berlin (Bortle 6-7) enstanden, von dem aus der Nebel abends um die 2 Stunden zu sehen war.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
