Description

The Ghosts of OrionThe ghosts IC423 and the smaller IC424 are small reflection nebulae in the constellation of Orion. They are lit up by the bright nearby stars, Mintaka (shown here) and the out of field Alnilam against a background of faint gas. Both were discovered by Williamina Fleming on June 27, 1888. Apart from that I haven’t been able to find out more about them.Mintaka is the westernmost of the three stars of Orion's belt. It is easily visible to the naked eye, one of the brightest stars in the sky, and has been known since antiquity. It is a bright blue giant star of spectral type O9.5II. It is more than 190,000 times more luminous than our Sun, and it has an apparent magnitude of 2.23.

Taken under the dark skies of Ladys Pass in Victoria Australia.
