Description

It has been quite a while since I've been able to post anything (unfortunately, too much going on at work!) I was able to analyze this data from back in September. This image depicts Saturn on the evening of September 6th, along with its moons (from left to right) Tethys, Dione, and Rhea. The red spot above Saturn is a 10th magnitude orange-red star in Capricornus (TYC 6339-0424-1).

The image is a composite of two different exposures (one for Saturn itself and one for its moons). I used a QHY 5iii 178C camera coupled with a IR cut filter, 2X Barlow, and atmospheric dispersion corrector. I think I managed to get the ADC tuned a bit better than I have in the past. I acquired a total of 11 videos (each approximately 120 s long), and stacked the best 40% of all frames (total of about 4400). These frames were de-rotated in WinJuPos.

In an effort to improve my skill level, I purchased a book on planetary imaging edited by Christope Pellier and colleagues (including several planetary experts throughout Europe). This book is really impressive -- I found the guidance in the articles quite rigorous and helpful. My execution of their recommended methods is certainly far from perfect, but at least for me, their book helped me to achieve one of my better images of this planet.
