Milky Way Rising Over Sedona's Red Rocks

This was an absolutely magical evening I was able to spend underneath the stars in Sedona during my trip out West in June. I spent 2 nights in Sedona and completely fell in love with it. The stunning red rock formations and dark skies make Sedona an amazing place for astrophotography. Combine that with a ridiculous number of hiking trails and its proximity to a stunning array of beautiful and varied landscapes and I was planning my trip back pretty much as soon as I got home.

In this image you can see the Milky Way arch stretching over the red rock formations of Sedona. Included in the image are the famous rock formations known as Bell Rock and Courthouse Rock which are reflecting the lights from the nearby village of Oak Creek on the right hand side. The Milky Way then stretches all the way to the outskirts of Sedona on the far left side of the image. As you can see this was not a perfectly clear night but when combined with the green air glow the clouds help make for a dynamic looking night sky. While you can see the light pollution from both Sedona on the left and Oak Creek on the right it’s worth noting just how dark the skies were even as I was positioned directly between these two towns.

This image was taken on my first night in Arizona and was actually my first attempt at imaging the full Milky Way arch. As with the deep sky astrophotography I'm used to, I'm finding Milky Way photography to have a bit of a learning curve, especially in terms of post processing which is why it's taken me some time to finish this one. But the challenge is part of what I find so addictive about this hobby and what makes the end result that much more rewarding.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
